In this book review, I look at soon-to-be-released (in print, with electronic version available already) The Well-Grounded Java Developer, a book whose topic selection has interested me since first hearing about it in early 2011. I love trying out new programming languages and my next learning would be Jython, an implementation of the Python programming language written in Java. The chapter also contrasts completely new languages designed for the JVM (Groovy, Scala, Clojure) with "reimplementation" languages (pre-existing languages ported to the JVM such as Jython, JRuby, and Rhino). Does anyone know if the source code files for the exercises exist anywhere online. The code was taken from "Programming Collective Intelligence," by Toby Segaran, chapter six. I'm going through the SCJA Java version 6 book. Bill Publisher : New Riders Publishing Pub Date : December 21, 2001. Fusion Programming: From Python to Clojure and Back. Here's a simple Jython script to get the current directory (scarfed & modified from WebsphereTools): import sys import java.io as jio currentdir = javaio. Feb 19, '12 8:30 PM Since Field works at the level of Python-on-Java (via Jython), and Clojure runs in the JVM, the Python and Clojure worlds inevitably collide. A test was written using the exact same algorithms, using Jython and Java. Jython for Java Programmers By Robert W. OK next up we want Java to be able to execute a Jython script proper. Robert Bill's Jython for Java Programmers from New Riders is an essential introduction to the complexities of the merger between two popular object-oriented languages, Python and Java. This "for" loop construct is very close to Java's imperative style of programming. The following is a very simple sample written in Jython to print out the name of the first virtual machine in inventory. As a by-product, the vSphere Java API makes Jython programming a lot easier. Groovy is more familiar to JAVA programmer than Jython but not by much since its syntax is Ruby-ish. Both Groovy and Jython do very good job in minimizing JAVA's complexity. Some are old and some are new but JVM compatible versions of established languages with the likes of JRuby and Jython, Java-esque languages like Groovy and Scala and brand new languages like Clojure and Kotlin offer genuine options for those that appreciate the performance and reliability of the The reality is that as developers we are constrained by the suitability of the language, the tooling support and by what languages companies are actually using.
